Who Am I

Richard Vaughan took the helm at Squash Australia in 2015, joining from Badminton Ireland where he was Chief Executive Officer for four years.

Richard was a former World No6 badminton player, winning European and Commonwealth Games medals.

In Ireland he oversaw the transformation of the Organisation from one of insolvency in 2011 to the leading Small to Medium National Sports Governing Body in Ireland, increasing revenue from €1.1 million to €1.6 million, increasing participation rates and the development of a new National Badminton Centre. The Performance Programme was equally successful, based at Trinity College campus the programme has two Olympians, three European Games medallists and European Junior Champion.

Prior to Ireland Richard was a Digital Specialist for Gravit-e part of the K3 Group where he project managed large integrated ICT developments and advised on eCommerce, digital marketing and social media strategy.

Richard is a Non-Executive Director and Chair of the High Performance Commission at Badminton Europe, a Member of the Institute of Directors, he has consulted for the Badminton World Federation around the Olympic Games and Coach Education, developed a High Performance System in Barcelona, Spain and developed a Performance Pathway Strategy for ASPIRE in Qatar.

Prior to this Richard was worked in Digital marketing, directing accounts for Gravit-e (part of the FD Group) specializing in eCommerce and digital marketing.

Richard was a former Double Olympic Badminton Player and former Badminton World No7, from Caerphilly, Wales. British No1 for a decade, Medallist at the European and Commonwealth Badminton Championships in addition to 21 International title wins.

In a career hampered by injury, Richard reached the last 16 of the 2000 Olympic Games with wins against Thailand number one Boonsak Polsana, and Swedish number one Wengberg before losing to the World Champion Sun Jun from China. In the same season he won a European bronze medal in men’s singles at the 2000 European Championships in Glasgow.

Richard won a bronze medal at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games with wins over Singapore’s Susilo and India’s Gupta. In 2004, Vaughan had a series of good wins including beating World Champion Xia Xuanza (China) at the All England, Tien Minh Nyguen (Vietnam) at the US Grand Prix, before qualifying for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games reaching the last 16.

In 2005 Richard found the Richard Vaughan Badminton Academy, an Elite non-profit Academy to support young British Badminton Players. The RVBA produced numerous British junior badminton champions, Commonwealth Games players, National senior Badminton champions, and formed a corporate social responsibility programme with Finsbury foods via a badminton in schools programme, feeding in the RVBA Academy in the South Wales valleys.

As a member of the Team Bath Badminton Team (Bath University) he gained a BSc in Economics & Politics, a MA in Coach Education and Development; helped the Team Bath Badminton Team winning the BUSA men’s singles title and team title in 2007.

Since 2005 Richard has enjoyed working as a performance consultant for organizations including the Catalan Badminton Federation, the Badminton World Federation 'Road to London 2012’, ‘Road to Rio 2016 projects and Badminton Europe on multiple regional projects.

Richard Vaughan has years have experience as a player, representing Team GB at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games, ranked 7 in the world, winning 21 international titles and European and Commonwealth medals along the way.
Richard trained in the Danish, Malaysian and Korean national teams and worked with many top coaches throughout his career- establishing global experience from the best in the sport.

Richards’s performance work includes:
Richard has a MA in Coach Education and Development from Bath University, and developed a skill based programme for Catalunya Badminton called 'Millor' Badminton and an adapted version for Badminton Ireland called 'Teicnic Badminton'.

For the past few years Richard has been involved in the development of the Badminton World Federations new school badminton programme called ‘Shuttletime’ and the new coach education/licensing system from level 1 to level 3, piloting all the levels in Ireland.

  • Performance lead for Catalunya Badminton – establishing a successful high performance system based around a new 5.8 million training centre in Granollers;
  • Performance lead for the Irish team at the 2012 Olympic Games;
  • Programme manager for the Badminton World Federations London 2012 project in Africa;
  • Programme manager for the Badminton World Federations Rio 2016 project in Rio;
  • Multiple Badminton Europe projects.
